Thane: In a remarkable medical breakthrough, Dr Kapil Khandelwal, Consultant Neurosurgeon at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, successfully led a complex spine surgery that helped an 82-year-old Indian Army veteran regain his ability to walk after being immobile for nearly a year.
The patient, a highly decorated veteran honoured by the President of India for his contributions during the 1962 and 1971 wars, had been suffering from chronic and worsening back pain, eventually leading to complete immobility.

Upon his arrival at KIMS Hospitals in a wheelchair and severe discomfort, he was diagnosed with lumbar canal stenosis, a degenerative spinal condition causing nerve compression and instability in the spinal bones.
Dr Kapil Khandelwal and Team Conducts Thorough Pre-Operative Assessment
Despite his age and a pre-existing cardiac condition that classified him as a high-risk surgical case, Dr Kapil Khandelwal and his team conducted a thorough pre-operative assessment. They proceeded with a traditional open spinal surgery comprising an L3/L4 discectomy and L4/L5 posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) – procedures typically reserved for younger or lower-risk patients.
“Operating on elderly patients with comorbidities demands extreme precision, preparation, and multidisciplinary coordination. This case reflects how personalized planning and teamwork can lead to life-transforming outcomes,” said Dr Kapil Khandelwal.

Within 24 hours of the procedure, the veteran was able to stand and walk with support. He was discharged from the hospital just five days later, well on the path to full recovery. His surgery was supported by Dr Amogh Zavar, Consultant Spine Surgeon, Dr Dipesh Pimple, Consultant Neurologist, and the hospital’s anaesthesia team.
While minimally invasive technology was available, the patient’s condition warranted a traditional approach. The successful operation is a powerful example of how timely intervention, expert care, and hospital infrastructure can offer renewed life to elderly patients.
This case reinforces the importance of not dismissing surgery solely based on age. With detailed clinical evaluation, modern medical facilities, and the expertise of specialists like Dr Kapil Khandelwal, elderly patients suffering from spinal disorders can achieve meaningful recovery and an improved quality of life.
